Perhaps few people know that in Italy are about to be installed electrochemical storage systems of electrical energy, or batteries, for several tens of megawatts in power and hundreds of megawatts in energy. Likewise, few people know that Italy, thanks to this and other projects, is probably the most advanced country in the world in the implementation of smart grids and storage systems, so as to attract the interest of many of the most important companies operating in the sector and become a reference point for all institutions that intend to start similar projects in their country.
Let’s say that, for once, Italy is doing the part of the innovative country and is not just towing others.
The Needs
The customer, by virtue of his role as director of energy dynamics, has embarked on a new and innovative process of modification of the MV and LV power grids, finally starting the change long predicted: the transition from the traditional power grid to the real “SMART GRID”!

<< (…) a smart grid differs from a traditionally managed MV and LV electricity distribution network by the active nature of the network itself and by the different degree of use of communication and control systems;>>
At a strictly technical level, the transition from the passive to the active network, as well as intelligent, requires systems and protocols of communication between the various devices of the network itself, allowing each instrument and equipment to interact with others. In addition to this, however, it is necessary to make the system stable and able to support and support large energy imbalances concentrated in a very short time generated by renewable energy sources and by the manoeuvres and arrangements necessary for the network to adapt them moment by moment to the new configuration required by the users, both local and regional and even national.
The main system able to give stability to our network is the electrical storage, ie a temporary storage of electricity can deliver large amounts of energy in a very short time in transients where the traditional network can not remedy. Put simply, the storage systems act as “temporary tanks” capable of countering the current energy crises and give the system the opportunity and time to adapt to the changing conditions of use of the energy network.

- storage systems can, in turn, be functional to the dispatching activities of non-programmable production plants such as non-programmable production plants such as plants from renewable energy sources;
- the technological evolution of storage systems also seems to offer new potential for use strictly functional to the activities of distribution companies, such as improving the quality of service, voltage stabilization and frequency control.
From this important premise the brief but equally important requirement of our Customer: to conceive, design, coordinate and implement the management and power systems of the shelters with no less than 2 MWA of precious lithium batteries inside them.
The Solution
ESA Elettromeccanica, thanks to its unparalleled engineering skills and high level of integration and multidisciplinary knowledge (electronics, electrical engineering, mechanics, air conditioning) was involved in the brand new and innovative project by one of the 3 large groups that won the coveted national tender for the development and creation of a “stationary storage system of electrical energy in the power range 1 – 2 MWA”.
